The present body of work, My art for other people, utilizes the tooling and techniques used in creating decorative/functional pieces while also representing a departure to purely creative, sculptural work. This corpus demonstrates Jason’s continued effort to “think with material,” that is, to conduct playful experiments of texture, line, color and form while also deploying the sophisticated and technical abilities of a fabricator and blacksmith.

The group of red and gun-blue pieces are at the core about opposites and contrasts in color, texture and form. The impetus is one of play and improvisation, while also defining line, shape, positive and negative space. They were created through Smith’s lifelong dedication to create works that respond to materials.
