work study wrap up
It has been a privilege to partner with Druid Hills High School this year to provide work study opportunities for two high school students. The students have been able to spend part of their school day getting real world experience in the metal work trade. They are wrapping up their work study program, but we hope they will always remain part of the Smithworks extended family.
Hunter has been in a dual enrollment program through Georgia Piedmont Technical College through his senior year where he was able to get a trade school education while also participating in the work study program at Smithworks. Hunter says that having access to the wide variety of processes that take place in the real life application of the trade was a more effective way to learn than through the books in his school program.
Hunter will be continuing his schooling to get his certification while also gaining additional fabrication experience working in an automotive welding shop. Hunter has aspirations of one day becoming a mushroom farmer and loves to make art as a hobby.
Banks joined the work study program because he was interested in a career in construction management, and he wanted the chance to get experience to see if he would actually like working in the trades.
Through his time at Smithworks, Banks has gained fabrication skills and has been able to gain valuable knowledge about how job sites operate that will make his future studies more meaningful.
Banks has loved his experience at Smithworks because he’s had the opportunity to learn by trial and error. He loves how everyone who works at Smithworks gives you the space and trust to figure things out on your own.
Banks will be attending Georgia Southern for Construction Management this fall. His experience meeting contractors and networking with other trades people has helped him feel confident about his major. Being able to see how the the work he has done at Smithworks intersects with all the other trades to bring a cohesive vision to life will surely serve him well in his studies.
